It is that time of year again when the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) celebrates National Quality Week (NQW). The week of activities coincides with World Standards Day (WSD), observed annually on October 14 to promote the application of standards for improvements in product and service quality, environmental preservation and more.
This year’s theme is “A Shared Vision for a Better World – Spotlight on SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.” The theme was jointly selected by members of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as part of a multi-year campaign focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The SDGs seek to address social imbalances, promote sustainable economic development and slow the rate of climate change by 2030. In their message marking WSD, the Standards organisations noted that achieving these ambitious goals requires greater collaboration.
The joint 2026 message highlights the importance of incorporating the SDGs into WSD as an inclusive way of strengthening cooperation among public and private-sector partners, while making use of available tools, including international standards and conformity assessment practices. The message further notes that “by working together, we are empowering people with real-world solutions to face sustainability challenges head-on.”
This year’s focus on SDG 7 draws attention to the role standards play in supporting safe, efficient and sustainable energy systems, while enabling these systems to work alongside the digital and communication technologies that are increasingly shaping our lives and economies.
For Guyana, the focus on affordable and clean energy comes at an important time as the country continues its economic transformation and expands its productive sectors. Ensuring that energy-related products, systems and services are safe, efficient and reliable is critical to achieving sustainable development.
Increasingly, it is becoming obvious that development cannot happen in isolation of standards. Standards provide a common reference for organisations and industries, helping them address challenges, improve efficiency, encourage innovation and build confidence in the products and services they provide.
Through the promotion and implementation of national, regional and international standards, the GNBS helps to create greater awareness of quality and supports those who are desirous of achieving it.
Therefore, NQW 2026 serves as a reminder to all stakeholders to consider what quality means in their respective spheres, and to act on what can be done to improve it. GNBS is always ready to support.
This year, several activities are planned by GNBS for NQW. In keeping with the theme, the Bureau will launch a ‘Did You Know? Standards and Energy Campaign’ on social media to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy. Meanwhile, a Sensitisation Session will be hosted to engage media practitioners on the services offered by the Bureau. There will also be a free Root Cause Analysis Training in Region Ten, aimed at further improving the delivery of health services at the regional level. Finally, later in October, several GNBS employees will be recognised for their service from 5 to 25 years.
Ensure you follow GNBS social media pages for updates on these activities as well as informative videos, radio programmes and newspaper articles promoting standards and quality.
Happy National Quality Week and World Standards Day 2026!
