Pressure gauges play an important role in industries where accurate measurements are essential for safety, efficiency and reliability of operations. Recognising this importance, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), through its Industrial Metrology and Testing (IMT) Department, provides reliable calibration services for pressure gauges used across several sectors.
A pressure gauge is an instrument used to measure pressure within a system. These instruments are commonly found in the oil and gas, manufacturing and aviation sectors, where inaccurate pressure readings can have serious consequences.
For instance, inaccurate measurements from uncalibrated or improperly maintained instruments can contribute to customer dissatisfaction, safety risks, loss of revenue and reputational damage. Regular calibration therefore helps businesses determine whether their pressure gauges are providing accurate and reliable measurements.
GNBS calibrates pressure gauges using reference standards which are traceable to the International System of Units (SI). The Bureau uses measurement standards with traceability to recognised international institutions, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Germany.
GNBS’ Pressure Laboratory is also accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the international standard specifying requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Calibration activities are conducted by qualified Technicians according to established procedures to ensure reliable results.
Companies, especially those operating in sectors where accurate pressure measurement is critical to safety, product quality or process control, are encouraged to calibrate their pressure gauges at appropriate intervals. Regular calibration can help identify measurement errors, reduce the risk of equipment damage and safety incidents, while ensuring compliance with applicable requirements.
Businesses should also maintain calibration records and establish suitable calibration intervals based on factors such as the instrument’s frequency of use, operating conditions and previous calibration results.
Since 2023, GNBS has calibrated almost 900 pressure gauges across various industries. This total includes the 165 gauges already calibrated this year, which demonstrates the continued demand for reliable and traceable pressure measurement services.
Beyond calibrating pressure gauges, the GNBS provides calibration services for other measuring instruments, including balances, masses, measuring cylinders, thermometers, micropipettes, torque wrenches, multimeters, micrometers and calipers.
GNBS encourages companies and laboratories to take advantage of its traceable, reliable and affordable calibration services. Upon completion of the calibration process, a certificate or report is issued by the GNBS to show that the instrument was calibrated.
