In today’s market arena, where products and services are exchanged on a daily basis across multiple sectors, accuracy, fairness and consumer protection are essential. The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), as the National Measurement Institute (NMI), plays a critical role in providing verification services through its Legal Metrology Department. By law, under the 1981 Weights and Measures Act, all measuring instruments used in trade must be verified by GNBS.
GNBS verification services focus on ensuring that measuring instruments used in trade and law enforcement are accurate and comply with national standards. These instruments are used in everyday commercial transactions and directly influence the quantity of goods or services received by consumers. Among the key instruments verified by GNBS are weighing scales used in markets, supermarkets and shops to ensure consumers receive the correct quantity of goods purchased. Fuel pumps at the gas stations are also verified to confirm that motorists are receiving the exact amount of fuel they would have paid for.
The Bureau also verifies moisture meters, which are used in the agriculture sector to measure the moisture content of paddy. Accurate moisture measurement is essential for determining quality and pricing. Additionally, the compartments of tanker wagons used for transporting petroleum are verified to ensure that the volumes delivered to businesses and consumers are accurate, thereby preventing shortages or overcharges in bulk transactions.
Metering devices used in utility services, such as electricity meters, are verified to ensure accurate billing to consumers. The Bureau also verifies speed guns and cameras to ensure that speed measurements recorded for traffic enforcement are accurate and reliable. Further, GNBS Inspectors have a crucial role in the verification of meters used on the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, to ensure precise measurements of crude oil produced and transferred.
When these instruments are verified, GNBS affixes an official verification seal or sticker, assuring consumers that the equipment has been checked for accuracy and is within the acceptable tolerance.
For businesses involved in trade, compliance with GNBS verification requirements is not only a legal obligation but also a key factor in building trust with their customers. Accurate instruments reduce disputes, improve transparency and enhance customer confidence. Businesses that consistently use verified equipment are more likely to retain loyal customers and maintain a strong reputation.
Verification services also promote equity in trade, creating a level playing field and supporting ethical business practices across all sectors. When businesses use accurate measuring instruments, no party gains an unfair advantage through under- or over-measurements.
Consumers are also encouraged to play an active role by checking for GNBS verification seals and reporting any malpractice or suspected inaccurate or unverified measuring devices. Public vigilance and reporting help to strengthen the effectiveness of the verification system and promote accountability in trade.
Additionally, in the area of Metrology, GNBS continues to play a leading role not only locally but also regionally in advancing measurement standards. From May 11-15, 2026, GNBS will host the Sistema Interamericano de Metrologia (SIM) Mid-Term Council and Quality System Task Force (QSTF) Meetings in Guyana. Metrology events like these will bring together regional and international stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, enhance quality systems and advance measurement standards across the Americas.
Finally, on May 20, GNBS will join the global community to observe World Metrology Day, under the theme: ‘Metrology: Building trust in policy making’. This theme highlights the importance of accurate measurements in generating objective evidence for informed and transparent decision-making.
